Landmark Depression Study
In 1994 the Foundation supported a validation study of the GDS depression screen among nursing home residents in New York City. In 1994 the Foundation supported a validation study of depression among nursing home residents in New York City. A total of 66 newly-admitted residents in two nursing homes were given complete psychiatric assessments and measured on the Yesavage Geriatric Depression Scale. As a result of this study, health care providers serving nursing home populations have an improved mental health diagnostic process and are now better able to detect depression among the elderly, which is easily treatable.

The findings were published in the May 1994 issue of the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, “Validating the GDS Depression Screen in the Nursing Home.” This work was selected by the American Health and Hospital Association as a landmark — setting the standard of care in the U.S. for long-term care facilities.
